What is the meaning of me-too or follow on drugs?

Me-too drugs and Follow on drugs are the common terminologies which used by pharmaceutical marketer.

A compound that is structurally very similar to already known drugs, with without minor pharmacological differences. Most of the time generic drugs are also called ‘me-too’ or ‘follow-on’ drugs.

The development of so-called ‘me-too’, or ‘follow-on’, drugs often provide wider therapeutic options and inject some price competition into the marketplace. Most of the time follow on or me too drugs are less costly as compared to innovator molecule (patented molecule).

A biosimilar (or follow-on biologic) is a biological product that is highly similar to an already approved biological product, notwithstanding minor differences in clinically inactive components, and for which there are no clinically meaningful differences between the biosimilar and the approved biological product in terms of the safety, purity, and potency.
